Don't Tase Me Bro
I think gbvh and jables were supposed to visit this weekend, and I believe this was the Pirate game that was on the agenda. Probably the most exciting the thing to happen at a Pirate game since 19-something-and-5.
U-S-and-A! U-S-and-A! U-S-and-A!

Mike Watt & the Missingmen - TONIGHT at the Brillobox!!
TONIGHT!!!! SUNDAY NIGHT...at our favorite little room in the Burgh. Much to my disappointment, this show is sold out (FAAAAAACK!!!!!!) I don't believe I've ever bought a ticket for the Brillobox in advance. Maybe Pittsburgh is less lame than we once thought...so that's a good thing. I think we'll go anyway, and try to score a ticket outside, or in the bar while eating some tasty grub.
Been hearing a lot of great things about this new record from the former Minutemen member.
a couple of Wire covers...
Also gives us a great excuse to pay some Minutemen...
Mike Watt likes Richard Hell and squid, per Thurston Moore. Pretty funny little segment that was left out of the We Jam Econo documentary on the Minutemen...
Hey...speaking of Wire. Bought their new album Red Barked Tree the other day, and it's pretty effin awesome. Get it.
Pens clinch 4th, Suck it Islanders
Remember that stink bug you squashed this morning in your bathroom? That was the NY Islanders. You hate seeing them around, and they can make a little noise when they flutter around aimlessly. But really...what harm do they cause? They're a nuisance indeed, but only on a very small scale.
The move by Bylsma to insert Godard in the line-up paid off immediately. Godard played along side Adams and Rupp on the 4th line, and assisted on the 1st goal of the game by Rupper. Immediately after, he fought Trevor Gillies on the centre ice face-off. Gillies won (sucks saying that), and I'm sure Godard would've liked a rematch...but Mission Accomplished. He took Gillies off the ice for 15 minutes. Not a peep from Turd Boy the rest of the game, who had only 2:09 TOI. He failed in his only responsibility as a player: injuring people. It's more likely we will never see this joke in an NHL game ever again. Gillies, FAIL.
Another FAIL: some impersonator named Haley. You may never hear his name again in a meaningful NHL game. Haley took a run at Deryk Engelland in the first, trying to take out his knees behind the Pens net. Engelland popped back up, and played the rest of the game unphased. Haley was not heard from again. Probably never will be.
Then there was Zenon Tonkaturd. Arron Asham took him off the ice for 17 minutes after their scrap. A pretty boring fight, and a draw by most people's standards. But again, Mission Accomplished. Tonkaturd had 3 times as much time in the box as he did on the ice. Bag your clubs, dick.
Comedic relief for the night: P.A. Parenteau took a high stick in the face in the 3rd. Legit call. The camera then zooms in on Parenturd as he's trying to pick a herpes scab off his lip as he argues with the ref for a double minor. Hilarious!
The only question left for Garth Snow and the Islanders:
Who will they try to cheap shot at the 1st tee box?
Other than John Tavares drawing a couple of penalties by giving himself whiplash, not too much more involving the side show. Actually, a pretty entertaining hockey game. 3-3 until the Shootout.
Kuni Mind Trick time...
Winner.
My 3 Stars of the Game:
btw: awesome pic of Rupp coming off the ice pre-game (I believe). should also mention that all of these great photos you see werestolen taken from the official Pens website media line under "photo galleries." we highly recommend it.
#1 Mike Rupp - Rupper got an ugly, get-to-the-net goal to open the scoring. He then drove the net on the PP, providing a bit of a screen on Zby's PP tally. sidenote: Michalek looks very comfortable on the PP. Rupp also assisted on the 3rd and final goal of the game. 1 G, 1 A, +2, 3 shots in only 7:00 TOI. Impressive return.
#2 Mark Letestu - Got the go-ahead goal late in the 3rd. It didn't stand, but Test Tube was money again in the face-off circle.
#3 Eric Godard - just for a lack of other stand-out performances, and more of an appreciation for Godard, who realistically, may have played his last game as a Penguin. If he doesn't play in Atlanta this afternoon, I'm afraid we've seen the last of EG, who is a UFA at season's end. You can pretty much bet you won't see him in the playoffs. Yeah, the guy is an enforcer in most simplest terms, and that job isn't the most glorious. But his teammates love him, and from what we've heard around the city, a great guy off the ice who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Props to you, Mr. Godard. We hope you're back. His 1 A, +1, and elimination of Gillies also merits this #3.
So with the Flyers dropping an OT loss to Buffalo on Friday, the Pens still had a chance to finish atop the Atlantic, and get the #2 seed. That was squashed last night when Philly came back to beat your Isles. Figures...that would be the team we would rely on help from. Oh well. Bring on the Bolts. The NHL Network will have an announcement show tonight at 10:00 for the 1st round schedule.

- Today's game vs. Atlanta is meaningless. If you're a fan, you still watch.

Wire Performs "Map Ref 41N 93W" - Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Web Exclusive: Wire Performs "Map Ref 41N 93W" - Web Exclusives - Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
I missed the live performance of "Red Barked Trees" a couple nights ago. Fortunately, this was up on-line.
Wire will be playing live in Chicago this Saturday night at the Metro. Interested to hear if any of my Chicago peeps will be going. Should be a hoot.
kinda getting jackt for tonight
Let 'em know you're there!!
Just heard Eric Godard will be dressing tonight. It'll be EG's first game since...what'ya know...that last game they played on Long Island. Sounds like Chris Conner may get sacrificed. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with breaking up one of our best lines right now (Talbot-Dupper-CC), but I do think dressing Godard is the right thing to do.
I'm NOT suggesting the Pens should seek retribution and muck it up tonight. However, I've been hearing a lot of dopes on the Fan suggest that the NHL is going to have a word with both clubs tonight. REALLY?!? Think about this for a second...
THE NHL DOING SOMETHING TO PREVENT SOMETHING STUPID. Say it again...
The Pittsburgh Penguins should rely on THE NHL DOING SOMETHING TO PREVENT SOMETHING STUPID??
That would be a first.
The Pens need the meat in the line-up tonight, for protective purposes only. The NHL isn't going to prevent a god damn thing. Again...not saying we need to start anything. We just need a presence. The Islanders have nothing to lose. We do. THAT, combined with the fact that Garth Snow is a Moron, should scare anybody that these puke bags will come out with more cheap shots.
They send out Gillies. We send out Godard. Take them both for 10 minutes. Who cares. They send out Haley. We send out Rupp. They send out Tonkaturd. We send out Engelland. Give them all game misconducts. Just keep them off the ice. Otherwise, you're giving the Isles a free pass at attempting to injure.
What we can't have, is jag bags like this skating around taking runs at Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, and Chris Kunitz.
I think it's a move that HAS to be made. Simply because: I'm tired of relying on the NHL to take matters into their own hands. It will NEVER happen.
So what if Godard or Asham breaks a hand on someone's face? Or Engelland for that matter. If it saves one of our stars from getting another concussion, I say OK.

image taken from Pensblog...again. Love those guys.
Garth Snow digs Nickelback
just another reason we think these guys are turds...
I'm not judging, but it has been scientifically proven that Nickelback is bad music...
who am i to argue with science?
The rematch in Long Island tonight. I'll be proudly sporting my Bury Gillies t-shirt courtesy of the fine folks over at Pensblog. However...I don't see this game getting outta hand again. The only way we see a repeat of the circus we saw on our last trip is if the Islander goon squad starts things up...which wouldn't surprise me. But the Pens are traveling this weekend on business. Piss on Eddie Shore.
The Beloved stands 1 point back of Philly with 2 games left. We will win the division and at least 2nd place in the conference. This is how it's going down:
Pens ~ Fri at NYI (Nickelback fans) - WINNER.
Flyers ~ Fri at Buffalo - Loser.
Flyers ~ Sat vs NYI (Nickelback fans) - Winner. In the clubhouse with 105 pts.
Pens ~ Sun at Atl (Fading Byfugliens) - WINNER. Atlantic Division Champs with 106 pts.
You heard it hear first.

Explosions In the Sky - Stage AE
Another band from Austin, Texas that plays long songs is coming to the Burgh. TOMORROW - THIS FRIDAY 3/8 ~ STAGE AE (yes, the new one next to Heinz Field)! Tickets can be bought over at Ticketbastard (but don't let that stop you) for $22.
EITS have been around for @ 10 years, and they've got a new record coming out at the end of April titled Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. It's their 7th release, but first since 2007. This is that album's first track, titled Trembling Hands...
Here more over on their MySpace page HERE. Pre-orders for Take Care are being taken on their on-line store HERE. Good stuff.
Champions League Quarters Irrelevance (pretty much)
Barcelona trounced Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 (Jess pronounces this "SHACK-tard DOUGH-nuts" for some silly reason), with David Villa and Lionel Messi both being held off the score sheet. Basically, this leaves only 1 of the 2nd leggers next week with any meaning.
Dani Alves looked like he had $$ on the Shak for most of the game, before scoring Barca's 2nd goal on Andres Iniesta's beauty of a set-up. Prior to netting the goal on a lovely finish, he seemed insistent on setting up Shakhtar with a goal of their own. Then he scored and proceeded to celebrate like a dick. I've grown tired of Dani Alvez.
I love Iniesta, though. Easily the man of the match. Props to Seydou Keita as well, who got me (minus 2 goals) the GW.
So the Barcelona and Real Madrid trouncings (up 4-0 on Spurs) basically means there will be meaningless 2nd legs next week. That sucks. What we can look forward to, however, is 4 (FOUR!) El Classicos over a 2 week period. These two will meet twice in the Champions League Finals (April 26-27, May 3-4) for a chance to go to the CL Final. They will also meet on Sunday, April 17th in La Liga action (Barca +8 pts), and again 3 days later in the Copa del Ray Final. FCKYA! I'm sensing another treble!
The Man U / Chelsea match was much more competitive. And while I was rooting for a penalty call on Patrice Evra in the closing minutes for taking down Ramires in the box (this should have been the equalizer and won me my "draw" play), I find enjoyment in watching Chelsea lose. Fernando Torres has still yet to score in a blue shirt, and seeing the frustration grow is pretty awesome. Even more comical is watching him nose dive in the box, and then get yanked off the turf by Rio Ferdinand. Eff Torres.
And what the hell is Drogba getting subbed off for in lieu of Torres?! I'm not a big Drogba fan, but he was clearly more effective than Chelsea's #9. Anyway, nice away W for the Red Devils, who will have the clear advantage up 1-0 going back to Old Trafford. The Winner will have the luxury of playing Shalke 05, and avoiding either of the Spanish giants until the Final. I'm rooting for a Man U / Barcelona final, myself.
Oh...Chelsea apparently has some dude named Jerkoff on their squad. No joke.
Going out to my man Iniesta!!

Schalke 05
Good thing I bet that over. The Inter side play was doomed.
Stan the Man (silly Serb) scores the most amazing goal ever, 20 seconds in. I go crazy...
STAN THE MAN!!! CLICK HERE!!!!
The next 89 minutes were ruined by the absolute worst defensive play I've ever seen from my beloved Nerazzurri. Schalke hung 5 on our back line. Chivu sucks, and his little helmet makes him look stupid. Andrea Ranocchia looked like a deer in headlights the entire match. I love Zanetti, but I love him in the midfield...not as one of our fullbacks to be relied on for the occasional D. Even Maicon is a liability back there. It looked like we were wearing cement shoes on set pieces. Michel Therrien thought the Inter defense was soff...
So combine Schalke's 5-2 win with a 4-nil Real Madrid victory over Tottenham, and this basically adds up to a meaningless day of Champions League footie next Wednesday, when these 4 meet for the 2nd leg. Good thing the NHL Playoffs start that day.
TODAY'S CL GAMES:
Let's hope they are better than yesterday's. Scratch that, at least in the Barca match. I'm going to ride my buddy RandoMango's coat tails here, and lay the 2 goals against Shakhtar. Messi and Xavi are rested. And with La Liga pretty much sealed, full focus (if it wasn't already) can be put here.
The Chelsea / Man Utd game appears to have more cracker potential. I'm playing the draw, which would be a good result for Man Utd.
btw: props to my witty pal gbvh for the headline :) i wish i could take credit.

GBV - Iowa City
Easily one of my favorite shows from the "Classic Lineup" Reunion Tour of this past year. Bob was amped. Band was tight. Sans one dope down front who was present for only about 5 minutes, it was also one of the better crowds I've been in the middle of. Small intimate venue, with no real problems getting to the bar...at least for this guy. Tall boys!!!
Paddy Considine was in attendance, and along with openers Times New Viking, were having an absolute riot rawking out behind the band (Mitch side) the entire night. Speaking of Times New Viking...I love those kids. Adam (drummer) is fucking hilarious ("anyone got that Reds score?"). New album is coming out via Merge at the end of the month, and we'll surely post more on them in the upcoming week. Also got some video of TNV doing a few songs, including "Natural Resources, I Love Mine," which will be uploaded soon. They asked someone to join them with some tambourine play for their new one, "Fuck Her Tears." My better half obliged.
Bob ripped into "Closer You Are" to start another mammoth set (we've got this on video and will be uploading soon). Kind of a blur after that, as most of these shows turn into for me. Personal highlights included: "Over the Neptune / Mesh Gear Fox", "Buzzards...", "Break Even" (FCKYA!), "Some Drilling Implied", "Gold Star...", "Weed King."
No striped white pants for Demos. Mitch was in usual awesome form. Tobin continues to have this amazed look on his face, like, "look at all these crazy fuckers in front of me." Kevin gave me a pair of sticks to add to my collection. I love that dude. Bob had a couple of hilarious rants. One, when there were some issues with a mic, he asked for another one so he could shove it up his ass (or something like that). Another, where he poked fun at Dinosaur Jr for needing to add the "Jr" part.
Kevin's bass drum is pretty well decked out. Bob was sporting the brilliant U.S. Mustard Company shirt. The Cuervo bottle made it around down front. Another highlight...
Guided by Voices - Expecting Brainchild from Almost Human on Vimeo.
Beautifully shot by our good pal Tirpak, with the small amount of editing done by myself. Hope to upload more soon. For more stills, go HERE, or enjoy...
Great seeing so many good pals, making the 22 hour round trip drive well worth it. The fist pump arm is pretty sore 3 days later. Can't wait to do it again in Grand Rapids.
One bit of advice if you ever travel to Iowa City. DO NOT stay at the Sheraton downtown. Their security people apparently get erect on harassing guests. It's pretty creepy, actually.

Weekend Winners and Losers
Playing catch-up here. More important things took place this weekend...most notably Guided by Voices in Iowa City (update to follow).
From what I hear, Tyler Kennedy got his 60th goal of the year in a 4-2 win. Pens remain 1 point up on the Bolts for 4th place and home ice in the 1st round. Last home game of the year tonight vs New Jersey. Must win.
Milan Derby. 3-Nil bad guys. Some unknown dude in Iowa City of all places ruined this for me, with a "tough break today." What a dick. Serves me right for wearing my Marco Materazzi jersey in support of a team I was DVR'ing for later viewing. Oh well. Sounds like he saved 2 hours of my life. A 6th straight Scudetto is now a long shot, being 5 points back with 7 games to play. We were also jumped by Napoli. These are the bad times. And I'm still going to blame Rafa Benitez for the huge hole he dug us in to start the season.
Inter is back in action today at the San Siro to take on Schalke. My official play: Inter with a huge bounce back win. I'm also taking them to advance.
The best team on the planet has pretty much wrapped up La Liga. The Special One has apparently conceded.
2-1 L to West Brom. So much for any of those Top 4 hopes. Hodgson gets his revenge. Big game next week at home against Man City.
Glad I didn't buy that DeRosario jersey last year. WTF?!? I'm pretty clueless on this. DeRo...he gone.
Glad I didn't get lured into watching this. From what I here, there were about 40 total points scored in the championship game. I gave up my viewing interest after the first weekend when I was eliminated from all 7 of the pools I was in. I tried switching back in between periods of Pens games, but every time I did...COMMERCIAL. Eff that crap. I need a financial interest to watch hoops.
Winners:
Inter, as mentioned above. Lay it. I'm also going Over the 2.5.
Real Madrid / Tottenham. I believe I'm abstaining here. Madrid's odds are high. They've apparently packed it in La Liga competetion, and are down 8 points to Barca after their L over the weekend. Tottenham has apparently hit a wall. Players on both sides are injured with unknown statuses. Why force it? May play the draw.
WINNER.

Statement Game
Heading into last night, Coach Disco called this game a "statement game." We love Dan Bylsma, so we're not going to rip his comments. But here are a few of the statements we noticed:
Flat start. The Pens dominated the final 2 periods, but were done in by a horrid start. Can't happen when we meet again in Round 1.
We like to shoot the puck into belly buttons. I'm not sure Dwayne Roloson even has any extremities. What he does have, is an incredible torso that was eating up every one of the Pens' 37 shots (sans the accidental goal by Mike Rupp). It would be nice to pick a corner on this guy.
Steve Downie likes to run around and leave his feet when he hits people. Not that Stephane Auger or Kelly Sutherland noticed. Downie has added some game to his game, and he's no longer just a punching bag. He's still a dick, though.
James Neal may never score. Que broken record: he played a great game, 5 SOG's, some big hits, zero goals.
Jordan Staal apparently left his hands back in Pittsburgh. Hope they ship them to Florida so he has them in time for Saturday's game.
Marty St Louis is a pain in the ass.
Stamkos is not the same player from the 1st half.
Victor Hedman is David Steckl South. Pussy, to highest degree. Nobody went after Hedman for his hit on Crosby the entire game, which we expected and were fine with. But there's Hedman in the 2nd period, after a scrum, grabbing Tyler Kennedy from behind by the face. If you're gonna face wash someone from behind, expect that person to challenge you.
Hedman - 6'6" 229 lbs
Kennedy - 5'11" 183 lbs
But soon as Kennedy confronts Hedman face-to-face and drops the gloves, Hedman plays the scared card. My only point: if you're gonna hit people from behind, and grab their faces from behind, be man enough to face the challenge face-to-face.
Tampa Bay now trails the Pens by 3 points with a game in hand. Hopefully, the Penguin can make a better statement over their last four games.
I have no idea what is going on here...
